Zusammenfassung

Der Anatom Bartolomäus Eustachi beschrieb 1563 erstmals im 6. Kapitel der Opuscula Anatomica Venetiis die „Glandulae quae renibus incum- bunt“. Es gibt keine ausreichend verläßhchen Mitteilungen, daß die Nebennieren vorher bekannt waren. In der Folgezeit entstanden große Meinungsverschiedenheiten über die Existenz und die Funktion des Organs. 1627 heißt es in der Humani corporis fabrica des Spigelius: „Ad implendum vacuum, quod inter renes et diaphragma interstat“.
