The use of the SFS in the ankle joint has become routine. This holds true for the different types of malleolar fracture and for articular fractures of the tibia and fractures of the talus. Most of these fractures have been indications for internal fixation from the inception of the ASIF group. Techniques have since been developed, founded on well established principles. Progress was based on a better understanding of the accompanying injury to soft tissues, by study of the problems of approach and by critical analysis of the longterm results.
