Development of a Blood-Compatible Resin for Artificial Liver Support

  • Chapter
Artificial Liver Support

Abstract

The accumulation of a wide range of potentially toxic substances of differing molecular size and physical properties suggests that at present a specific approach to artificial liver support for the treatment of fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) is not possible. Our approach, therefore, has been the development of broad-spectrum adsorbents for use in whole-blood haemoperfusion. Charcoal haemoperfusion and polyacrylonitrile haemodialysis will remove water-soluble substances, but the removal of protein-bound substances has been limited by the lack of a sufficiently blood-compatible adsorbent.
