Abstract
Lung cancer as a cause of death for males shows a strongly increasing trend in the Federal Republic. Therefore, it is of interest to consider conditions in the individual Bundesländer. With regard to the increase in mortality from lung cancer, it is generally assumed that environmental factors (including the occupational environment) as well as noxious habits in particular (cigarette smoking) constitute heaalth risks, since parallel to the increasing death rates environmental impacts and the consumption of cigarettes have also increased. If one considers the incidence rates (Tables 5a, b), this correlation becomes particularly clear for men aged over 64 years in 1955 and 1975. These are age classes from before 1890 (deaths of 1955) and before 1910 (deaths of 1975), which showed an average increase of mortality from about 150 to more than 400/100,000.
