Zusammenfassung

Die Edelgase bilden die VIII. Hauptgruppe des Periodensystems (PSE). Sie haben eine abgeschlossene Elektronenschale (= Edelgaskonfiguration): Helium hat die s2 -Konfiguration, alle anderen haben eine s2 p6 -Konfiguration. Aus diesem Grund liegen sie als einatomige Gase vor und sind sehr reaktionsträge. Zwischen den Atomen wirken nur van der Waals-Kräfte, s. S. 76.
