Zusammenfassung
Obwohl seh dem 17. Jahrhundert verschiedene Stoffe bei der Behandlung von Infektionskrankheiten angewandt wurden (z.B. Chinin gegen Malaria und Emetin gegen Amöbenruhr), beginnt die Chemotherapie als Wissenschaft erst mit Paul Ehrlich. Er formulierte als erster das Prinzip der selektiven Toxicität. Er erkannte die spezifischen chemischen Beziehungen zwischen Parasit und therapeutisch wirksamem Mittel. Er untersuchte die Entwicklung der Resistenz gegen die Chemotherapeutica bei den Parasiten und die Rolle der kombinierten Therapie, die der Resistenzbildung entgegenwirkt. Ehrlichs Experimente im ersten Jahrzehnt des 20. Jahrhunderts führten zu den Arsphenaminen, dem ersten größeren Erfolg einer planmäßig betriebenen Chemotherapie.
