Abstract
Seeds of many species of angiosperms and gymnosperms will not germinate immediately after ripening even under conditions of moisture, temperature and oxygen tension generally favorable for growth. Such dormancy, like dormancy of buds, is of obvious survival value to plants, since it tends to restrict germination to environmental circumstances suitable for seedling establishment and survival. Different seeds in one seed crop often vary in their degree of dormancy, causing germination of the crop to occur over an extended period of time and thus increasing the probability that at least part of them will germinate under conditions favorable for survival.
