Durch die exponierte Lage und die Funktion der oberen Atemwege als Filter- und Konditionierungsorgan für die unteren Atemwege gehören die entzündlichen (infektiösen, allergischen, toxischen) Erkrankungen dieser Schleimhautareale zu den häufigsten Erkrankungen überhaupt.
