Abstract
We have already heard something about EEG monitoring this morning as well as this afternoon by Prof. Sandmann. I would like to discuss with you our experience using the EEG as intra-operative control method. A prospective evaluation performed 10 years ago related to the fact that up until this time only back pressure measurements for intra-operative monitoring purposes were performed as proposed by Wesley Moore. At this stage, it was considered whether perhaps one could perform selective shunting when using the ICBP as monitoring, but as the Circle of Willis is not always complete, but very often is interrupted or numerous variations may exist, this did not appear reliable as the only criterium for judging the necessity of a shunt. The back pressure is not only dependent on the contralateral stenosis, but frequently on the vascular arrangement of the Circle of Willis.
