Abstract

Anatol Rapoport was among the first to recognize the great potential of the non-constant-sum game, called the “Prisoner’s Dilemma”, in shedding light on the interrelation of social conflict and social cooperation. He was also one of the first to initiate experimental research in the early sixties on the intriguing questions posed by the Dilemma (Rapoport, 1974).

This contribution is an outgrowth of a research project on political attitudes of the German youth, conducted at the German Armed Forces Institute for Social Research (SOWI) by a research group including the authors and Heinz-Ulrich Kohr. Neither this Institute, nor the German Ministry of Defense should be held responsible for any of the views expressed in this article.
