Abstract

The laser is a unique source of energy whose potential can only be imagined. Comparable to the initial use of electricity a century ago, the laser has brought significant changes in many areas, especially medicine and industry. Unlike electricity, however, the laser has no counterpart in nature — it is purely an invention of the human mind. Whereas Roentgen immediately recognized the medical potential of X-rays, this was not the case for the first laser emissions, whose medical applications had to be discovered.
