Abstract
For future broadband communication networks the availability of powerful long haul transmission systems is mandatory. To push their efficiency to its limits, the bitrate per fibre, the repeater span and the reliability has to be increased as much as possible. In this way the cost per transmitted bit/s can be brought close to zero.
