Genetic Risks in Offspring of Epileptic Parents

Genetics of the Epilepsies

Abstract

Many family studies of epilepsy have been carried out. Alström [1] first investigated 897 families of epileptic probands and found the prevalence of epilepsy in 1.3% of parents, 1.5% of siblings, and 2.9% of offspring; these figures are higher than corresponding figures for the general population. In healthy family relatives of epileptic probands an epileptic EEG abnormality was observed frequently by Metrakos and Metrakos [7].
