Summary

The report starts with an introduction to the architecture of expert systems. An expert system is defined as a software-system based on knowledge of some specific domain and a kernel system which operates on the knowledge. After the attempt to classify the areas of application, a short description is given for some expert systems known in the wide field of chemistry. A german research and development project funded by the Bundesminister für Forschung und Technologie (BMFT) is reported. Especially the knowledge akquisition process in a wastewater treatment plant is pointed out. Some remarks on qualitative modeling and real-time connection are made.
