Summary

With increasing quality demands for closer strip thickness tolerances, roll eccentricities in rolling mills require effective compensation.

An advanced method is presented for reconstructing backup-roll eccentricities and compensating for their effect both within strip thickness control (gaugemeter-control) and when rolling with roll positioning control. The design, based on the observer-principle of control theory, uses only measured variables which are commonly available and it does not therefore require any sensors mounted on the backup-rolls. Eccentricity compensation is implemented using a digital signal processor board of an industrial multi-microcomputer system. Operational limitations, especially at higher rolling speeds are then basically imposed by the dynamic capability of the hydraulic roll positioning system and by measurement delays. Practical results of operation on the first stand of a tandem cold mill demonstrate the effectiveness of eccentricity compensation.
