Summary

The design of application systems in process control requires a combination of engineering disciplines covering system analysis and definition, hardware and software along with systems integration and maintenance during operation. These disciplines are applying different methods being partly supported by computerized tools of varying principles and considerations. Their application in the design of real-time systems for process control needs some integration towards toolsets rather than applying separate tools from a “toolbox”. Integration of methods and tools means matching the various system descriptions, being the output information of tools, to the required input format of the following tools. Integration means also the connection of tools to an uniform data handling system for all design results and to an uniform user interface. These interfacing problems and some solutions are presented with special regard to object-oriented data handling systems.
