Abstract
Since the first cardiac valve prosthesis was implanted in the normal anatomic position in 1960 (1), many different varieties of prostheses have been developed. In spite of the large number of types of prostheses used, none has been ideal to date. This report discusses the relative advantages and disadvantages of the various cardiac valve prostheses available today and the factors that should be taken into account in the selection of a prosthesis for a particular patient (2).
