Heat Flow Studies in the European Part of the Soviet Union

Terrestrial Heat Flow in Europe

Abstract

The results of the heat flow measurements on the territory of the Soviet Union (USSR) are reviewed and their distribution is discussed in terms of the tectonic structure. The heat flow map and the statistical analysis of heat flow data show that there are substantial differences in the heat flow values over the areas of Precambrian folding. In Phanerozoic folded regions the heat flow values regularly increase from old structures to young ones, thus not only the age of the main phase of folding should be taken into consideration but also the age of the subsequent tectono-magmatic activization of the structure. A pronounced heat flow differentiation has been established in tectonically active belts. The low values are observed in foredeeps, intramontane and neotectonic depressions, the high values in Cenozoic neotectonic mountain-folded structures and riftogeneous structures. It follows that the age of the last tectonomagmatic cycle is the fundamental criterion in the geological analysis of the heat flow data.
