Abstract
There is a close interrelation between the phenomena of heat generation, storage of heat, transport of heat and the temperature field in the crust. For evaluating the geothermal energy potential of a given area the most important set of physical data to be assessed are the temperature field and the mode of heat transfer in the subsurface.
In the context of an exploration of geothermal resources heat flow measurements and studies on the temperature field and the transport of heat in the crust are carried out for three purposes. First, for an assessment of regional geothermal conditions and mechanism in the subsurface. Second, as a method of prospecting since heat can be used economically only at high temperatures and therefore anomalously high temperature gradients near the earth’s surface are a prerequisite for the formation of economically exploitable deposits. Third, to obtain a data base to supply the boundary conditions in geothermal models describing geothermal reservoirs.
