Abnormalities Potentially Mediating the Effect of Cigarette Smoking on Atherosclerosis

Conference paper

It seems unnecessary to document further the strong association of cigarette smoking with the atherosclerotic diseases, particularly coronary heart disease and its sequelae. This association has been observed in almost every clinical and epidemiological study conducted in the past 30 years, and the consistency and strength of the association strongly suggest that there is a causal relationship. It now seems prudent to direct attention to elucidating the mechanisms of this relationship in biochemical and physiologic terms.
