Abstract

When working with to-day’s software systems, most users, in particular the casual or unexperienced users, run into problems because even if the systems are well documented, there is insufficient guidance from a semantic point of view. To enable the problem solver who is not necessarily a DP-professional, to make extensive use of DP-facilities he has to be supported in several ways:

  1. 1.

The user of program libraries has to be assisted in identifying the suitable program for a given problem.

  2. 2.

The user of data bases should be assisted in identifying data with a specific semantic meaning.

  3. 3.

After the identification of the appropriate problem solving method or program and the data to be processed, the execution of the program has to be invoked without burdening the user with DP specific problems.

  4. 4.

The user of any system should be guided through the jumble of usage rules, e.g. the data base user has to be told intelligibly how to set up a query.
