Abstract
In no other part of the bronchial tree have the cartilages been so thoroughly investigated as in the tracheal bifurcation. In the most outstanding contribution to this subject R. Heller and S. von Schroetter (1897) submitted 128 human and 48 animal tracheal bifurcations to dissection and classified them according to the amount of cartilage in the fibrous ridge, "der Theilungsfirst" or carina, separating the two main bronchi. Thirty seven black and white drawings illustrated their publication.
