Abstract

Many publications still illustrate tracheal cartilages as single, regular segments or discs neatly piled one above the other as the 16th century anatomists did. This simplified version can only be considered as a diagrammatic representation of the real situation which is shown in the photograph of a whole stained trachea (Fig. 5). This picture does confirm previous statements that tracheal rings may fuse, be broader or smaller, incomplete, forked or X or Y-shaped (G. Paturet, 1957) and agrees with W. S. Miller’s (1937) reconstruction.
