Abstract

The past 25 years have witnessed an immense change in the growth of the Australian population. Although Australia has been a settlers’ country from its very beginning, and the whole non-Aboriginal population consists of migrants or descendants of migrants, the inhabitants of this country were almost entirely of British stock up to World War II. The last pre-war census, carried out in 1933, recorded only 2.6% of the population as being born outside of Australia, British and other white British dominions. These included 18,000 born in non-white British dominions and in the U.S.A., who were most probably also of British stock. The situation did not change until after World War II; for example, during the post-depression decade, 1931–1940, the net gain due to migration was only 30,396.
