Summary
In 11 cats anesthesized with chloralose an acute brain edema was produced by intravenous injection of distilled water. To avoid effects due to intracranial pressure, the bone of the skull had been removed. During the development of edema the EEG and the direct and indirect responses of the pyramidal tract elicited by cortical and thalamic stimulation have been recorded. The indirect responses indicate the existence of synaptic transmission in the motor cortex, the direct responses the conduction along the nervous fibers of the pyramidal tract. Light- and electron microscopic investigations of the motor cortex have been performed before and after suppression of the synaptic transmission. In both cases, enormous swellings of the astroglial cells have been observed. The neuropile was not affected, the extracellular space was not enlarged. The swelling of the astroglia reached its maximal grade before the suppression of the synaptic transmission. It was concluded that in the absence of intracranial pressure, swelling of the astroglia has no influence upon the function of the nervous parenchyma.
