Zusammenfassung
Im Laufe der letzten Jahrzehnte ist es gelungen, viele biologische Vorgänge auf ihre biochemischen und physikalischen Grundreaktionen zurückzuführen. Wenig weiß man jedoch noch immer von den Vorgängen, die einen Kontakt zwischen Zellen und die Fusion von Zellen bewirken (Weiss 1958), also jenen Tatsachen, die im speziellen Falle, nämlich als Vereinigung einer männlichen mit einer weiblichen Geschlechtszelle, auch typische Ereignisse bei der Befruchtung sind. Nach Hartmann (seit 1909) ist die Ursache der Befruchtung die Sexualität, eine biologische bipolare Zweigeschlechtlichkeit, die, wie man vermuten und wünschen möchte, auf einer chemischen und (oder) physikalischen Polarität beruhen müßte. Ergebnis und Ziel der Befruchtung ist die Vereinigung zweier haploider Kerne zu einem diploiden, in dem später die meiotischen Prozesse ablaufen. Obgleich es vorübergehend so aussah, als sei wenigstens für einen Organismus, die einzellige Grünalge Chlamydomonas, die chemische Ursache der sexuellen Polarität und der Befruchtung gefunden, wissen wir nach Überprüfung der Ergebnisse und der Publikationen von Moewus, daß der von ihm beschrittene Pfad ein Irrweg war (Überblick: Moewus 1951; Kritik: unter anderen Förster und Wiese 1954, Renner 1957, 1958). Während mehrere Arbeitskreise durch Untersuchungen an tierischen Eiern, vor allem am Seeigelei, besonders in den letzten 20 Jahren reichlich Tatsachenmaterial über die stofflichen Vorgänge der Befruchtung gesammelt haben (Überblick: Metz 1957), sind im Bereich der pflanzlichen Befruchtungserscheinungen nur wenige eingehende physiologische und biochemische Arbeiten bekanntgeworden. Ein Überblick über die verstreuten Veröffentlichungen wird somit manche einmalige und zufällige Beobachtung miteinschließen müssen, um damit zu fruchtbarer Weiterarbeit anzuregen. Einige umfassende Überblicke über das hier zu betrachtende Gebiet, die viele Einzelergebnisse und Gedanken über die chemische Regulierung der Sexualvorgänge zusammentragen, stammen von Raper (1952, 1957 und in diesem Band) und Lewin (1954).
