Zusammenfassung
Das am besten untersuchte menschliche Eiweiß ist wohl das Hämoglobin. Das ist verständlich, da man Hämoglobin ziemlich leicht in reinem Zustand gewinnen kann; außerdem hat der Farbwechsel, abhängig von der Sauerstoffmenge, welche am Eiweiß gebunden ist, schon früh die Aufmerksamkeit der Forscher auf sich gezogen. Während die Struktur der Hämgruppe des Hämoglobinmoleküls schon ziemlich früh aufgeklärt war, blieb die Kenntnis des Globinteils des Moleküls lange Zeit beschränkt. Erst in den letzten 10 Jahren hat unsere Kenntnis über die Struktur und die Synthese des Globin s beträchtlich zugenommen. Forschungsgruppen, die das Molekül mit verschiedenen Techniken untersuchten, haben dazu beigetragen. Das räumliche Gefüge des Moleküls ist mittels Röntgenanalysen, wie sie von Kendrew und Perutz durchgeführt worden sind, bekannt geworden.
