Zusammenfassung
Leben ist charakterisiert durch eine spezifische Ordnung nach dem Prinzip des stationären Systems in dynamischem Gleichgewicht. Die spezifische Ordnung wird aufrechterhalten, indem der Organismus komplexe organische Verbindungen utilisiert, sie sich zum Aufbau und zur Erhaltung seiner Struktur und zur Produktion von Energie nutzbar macht. Dies spielt sich ab in einer ununterbrochenen Folge von Stoffaufnshme, Stoffumsetzung und Stoffabgabe. Man kann diese Dreiheit als eine Definition für Stoffwechsel gelten lassen, wenn man darunter die Summe aller chemischen Ereignisse im Organismus verstehen will: Die Zerlegung der mit der Nahrung aufgenommenen Nährstoffe in ihre Grundbausteine im Verlauf des Verdauungsvorganges, die Resorption, den Transport, die Verteilung der zerlegten Nährstoffe, ihre Aufnahme in die Zelle, ihr Schicksal innerhalb der Zelle und schließlich die Eliminierung der Stoffwechsel-Endprodukte.
