Zusammenfassung

In den letzten 10 Jahren ist in Amerika und Europa keiner Viruserkrankung mehr Beachtung geschenkt worden als der Poliomyelitis (im internationalen Schrifttum abgekürzt: Polio). Obgleich die ersten virologischen Untersuchungen bereits 1909 von Landsteiner (97) durchgeführt wurden, sind wesentliche neue Erkenntnisse erst auf Grund moderner Laboratoriumstechniken in den letzten 20 Jahren in erster Linie in den Vereinigten Staaten gewonnen worden. Die Virus-forschung war bis 1949 ausschließlich auf Tierversuche, vor allem mit Hühner embryonen und auf Plasmaclot-Gewebekulturen angewiesen. Dann folgte mit der von Enders (39) eingeführten Gewebekultur und dem Gebrauch von Antibiotica in der Gewebekultur ein großer Aufschwung in der experimentellen und angewandten Virologie.
