Abstract

Mitral insufficiency or regurgitation has been much neglected as an important clinical entity by the medical profession until the rather recent past. The major cause of this disinterest has been a lack of appreciation of its serious and often lethal nature. It has been assumed generally that the valvular dysfunction readily might be compensated for by relatively slight left ventricular hypertrophy and that it must be overshadowed invariably by a more important stenotic lesion. White, LEVINE, TARAN, GECKELER, and others have taken definite exception to this view.
