Abstract

This chapter is written at a time when the experimental studies on coronary artery occlusion are still incomplete. The author recognizes the desirability of presenting surgical techniques that can be applied to the human patient. It is possible to present such techniques at this time but it should be recognized that these techniques will be improved as additional knowledge is accumulated. The preparation of this chapter involves more than the mere description of techniques. The treatment of coronary artery disease by surgical operation is a radical departure from established practice and there are those who believe that this radical step should not be taken. It is in order, therefore, to present the reasons for surgical operation in the treatment of coronary artery disease. In order to do this it will be necessary to present background which was established in the experimental laboratory.
