Zusammenfassung

Antibiotica sind von Mikroorganismen gebildete Stoffe, die andere Mikroorganismen am Wachstum hindern oder sie zerstören [Waksman (1)]. Diese Definition war in den letzten Jahren einigem Wandel unterworfen. Einmal wurde sie durch die antibiotisch wirkenden Substanzen aus höheren Pflanzen und Tieren auf der Seite der Antibiotica-Bildner erweitert, anderseits erfolgte auch eine Ausweitung des Begriffes auf der Wirkungsseite durch die keimungshemmenden Stoffe (Zusammenfassung bei Sumere u. Massart) und durch Substanzen, die auf Tumorzellen oder Viren wirken (Stock u. Mitarb.). Der Begriff Antibioticum ist daher neu zu definieren: Antibiotica sind Stoffe biologischen Ursprungs, die in geringen Konzentrationen biologische Vorgänge in negativem Sinne beeinflussen.
