Abstract
The loss of sugars by plant cells and tissues (Wächter 1905) is a special aspect of the general phenomenon of loss of substances that was discussed in the second volume of this Encyclopedia1. It was stated there that this process is important because of its being an integrating part of all kinds of transport processes. Thus, the phenomena of accumulation, transport and mobilization of sugars all include a loss or excretion of the sugars in one way or the other.
