Zusammenfassung
Spricht man über Osteoporose, so stößt man meist auf die Vorstellung, daß es sich dabei um nicht sehr bedeutende und einförmige Veränderungen des Skelets handelt, die man übrigens gut zu kennen glaubt. In Wirklichkeit liegen die Verhältnisse ganz anders. Es ist geradezu verwunderlich, daß lange Zeit einem so großen Teil der passiven Bewegungsorgane, wie es das Knochensystem darstellt, so wenig Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet wurde. Eigentlich waren es nur jene klinischen Disziplinen, die sich mit den Veränderungen in der Statik, also des Bewegungsapparates zu befassen hatten, die allerdings dann auch nur von diesem Standpunkt aus derartige als krankhaft zu bewertende Änderungen diagnostizierten. Mehr und mehr haben neue Erkenntnisse gezeigt, daß sich mit der Stützfunktion und der Einordnung in die Mechanik des passiven Bewegungsapparates die Bedeutung des Knochens nicht erschöpft. Er ist auch im Stoffwechsel ein wichtiges Organ. Nicht allein, daß wir hier die großen Mineraldepots finden, wir beobachten auch die enge Abhängigkeit vom Eiweiß- und Zuckerhaushalt. Das Skelet stellt damit ein veränderliches, an den Lebensvorgängen stark beteiligtes System dar. Auf Grund unserer letzten Erkenntnisse ist der Ausspruch Brandenbergers treffend, daß es beim Menschen, mit Ausnahme vielleicht der Haut, der Generations- organe und der Blutbildungsstätten, kein Gewebe gibt, in dem dauernd so viel Bewegung herrscht wie gerade im Knochen. Vor allem die Isotopenforschung hat gezeigt, wie intensiv der Austausch ist, in erster Linie was die Mineralien angeht, aber natürlich auch, was die übrigen Stoffwechselvorgänge betrifft.
