Abstract
The usual distinctions between plants and animals vanish when dealing with the chemical and physical properties, or become restricted to those parts of the cells, such as the plastids, which are almost exclusive of one kind of cells. This is especially true of the nucleus and for this reason it would not be practical to separate data obtained on plants from those secured in animal tissues. On the other hand, certain types of data are more easily obtained in animal cells, with the consequence that results on plant cells must be completed by those reported for animal tissues. The unity of cell life allows that for many chemical and physical problems the data on plants and animals may be discussed together. Therefore, in this chapter and the following two (“Submicroscopic structure of the nucleus” and “Physical chemistry of the nucleus”) we will treat of plant and animal nuclei indistinctly, trying to point out the differences between both kinds of cells only in so far as they become of importance for the subject under discussion.
