Preliminary Results of a Pilot Study on Radon and Lung Cancer in Belgium

Abstract

Indoor radon is the most important source of population exposure to ionizing radiation. Most risk estimations are extrapolations of the observations among uranium miners. Because of the controversy about the extrapolation procedure a hospital based case-control study on indoor radon and lung cancer was setup in southern Belgium. For the moment complete data for some 60 cases and 120 controls are available. The analysis of these preliminary results indicates a clear increase in lung cancer risk for the subgroup of malesmokers, exposed to more than 100Bq/m3.
