Summary

The invention of the dynamo in 1866 met the requirements for the electrical energy transformation of big power. The first power plant and the trial of the first DC current transmission on shore is dated on 1882. A few years later (1889) the first three-phase-motor and the first three-phase-transformer became known. The revolutionary advantages of utilisation of electrical power generation and transformation could put through some years later aboard modem vessels. The exclusive DC technique from the beginning was replaced some decades later by three-phase technique. But the choice of the mains voltage was always orientated at the technical possibilities and limits of the consumers and control units. Even today the final victory of the three-phase-current technique is not foreseeable. There are plans and serious efforts about the development of high power DC mains for ship operation.
