Icebreaking Technology in Germany

Summary

The intentions to explore, exploit and transport natural resources from the American Arctic caused the ice research to boom in the early 70s. Germany took part in those activities with the establishment of new ice tank facilities at HSVA and with the ship yards’ developments of innovative icebreaking ships.

The development of the hull shape of icebreaking ships is pursued by HSVA along three different lanes: by model tests in the ice tank, by full scale tests with icebreakers in Arctic ice and, by the development of numerical models to calculate the icebreaking resistance and to optimize the shape of icebreaking ships. The research work in ice technology, sponsored over many years by the Federal Ministry for Research, has recently resulted in three product lines; the ship shape of the icebreaking pollution combat ship NEUWERK, the construction of icebreaking tankers for Russia by AKER-MTW Wismar and the conceptual design for inland waterway icebreakers in order to use these channels year-round for shifting cargo from roads to waterways.

Finally is the icebreaking technology a main part of the marine transportation system for the transport of hydrocarbons out of the Russian Arctic; this project is being pursued on national and international level.
