Abstract
The optimal closure policy for a year-class of prawns is derived using dynamic programming. The decision to fish or not to at a certain time depends on whether the number of prawns exceeds a certain critical level, represented by a “switching curve”, whose shape is determined by the model’s input parameters: individual growth, mortality, seasonal relative vulnerability to fishing gear, size specific prawn prices and costs and limits on effort. The switching curve offers a convenient tool for analyzing the sensitivity of the optimal harvesting periods to the input parameters, thereby identifying those parameters which research should aim to estimate most accurately. The paper presents an algorithm for computing such an optimal switching curve.
