Zusammenfassung
Die Lungenatmung wird von einem hochkomplexen neuronalen System geregelt, in dem einerseits „autonome“ und andererseits „willkürmotorische“ Mechanismen wirksam sind. Die dazu erforderlichen Reflexvorgänge und neuronalen Reaktionen werden sowohl durch rein neurogene Stimuli als auch durch stoffwechselchemische Reize (Chemorezeptoren) in Gang gesetzt und über Regelkreise (rückgekoppelt) gesteuert. Die Atmung ist einerseits eine fast maschinenhaft unentwegt tätige, rhythmische, unbewußte Vitalfunktion und andererseits sehr empfindlich von psychischen und emotionalen Faktoren beeinflußbar, die uns „die Brust schwellen“ oder den „Atem stocken“ lassen.
