Abstract
Many laboratory information systems are still designed for the exclusive use of one laboratory. The existence of various laboratories within a single hospital and the many interactions and relationships between these laboratories and the patient management system prompted us to develop a fully integrated system: one interactive laboratory system, implemented on the central hospital system and used by all laboratories. This paper describes the structure and design of the microbiology information system as developed and used in the 624 bed academic hospital, AZ-VUB, of the free university of Brussels.
