A Distributed Systems Approach to Patient Monitoring and Medical Data Management
Computer-based patient monitoring and medical data management systems are expanding at a rapid rate. Advances in hardware capabilities, coupled with tumbling price structures, have facilitated the introduction of computer systems in clinical areas of the hospital including intensive care units, the clinical laboratory and the pharmacy (1,2). To a lesser extent these systems have been used for hospital- wide data retrieval and medical data management. Existing systems have been described on hardware ranging from mainframe to microprocessor in size (3,4). Software has varied from purchased “turnkey” software to entirely user written code. Relatively little effort has been expended on building networks of computer systems for monitoring and medical data management. We have developed a comprehensive hospital-wide network of distributed mini-computers for clinical data entry and retrieval, using commercially available systems and applications software whenever possible.
