Abstract

The rapid advance of medical science has created several problems which severely hamper timely utilization of new medical knowledge without the assistance of computerized information systems. Physicians of all levels find themselves unable to keep abreast of new medical developments and diagnostic discoveries. This paper attempts to present a solution to this problem. The design of a computerized medical consultation system is discussed. The system consists of a medical knowledge database and a telebrowsing scheme. The heart of the database is an associative category file which contains the disease categories and subcategories together with their associated manifestations, diagnostic descriptions, and treatment plans. The telebrowsing scheme enables the physician to consult with the system through computer-physician interaction.
