Abstract

For many Systems Science seems to be hardly helpful because it presents itself as an unstructured abundance of system theories. It will be shown that it is possible to classify those theories in an appropriate and illuminating manner, emanating from a prior classification of discernible fundamental system aspects. An observation of the coverage of these fundamental system aspects by related theories reveals why System Science does not yet offer sufficient support to cope with large complex systems.

This paper describes the results of a Philips Research Labs. Working Group on Systems. This group, which still exists, has four members: J. H. A. Melis, T. C. A. M. Claasen, C. J. Koomen and F. H. J. Feldbrugge.
