Abstract
The concept of ‘the prophetic’ is defined as a level of analysis of social systems and is analysed as a subsystem of ‘the social order’. The latter is charted as a matrix of concepts in common use. Matters of common knowledge are used to illustrate how the scheme may correspond to parables of action and to types of prophetic movements currently observed.
