Abstract
A medical research project where complex data were analyzed is described. The method chosen used a program system for clinical laboratory data to organize and select data and a general statistics program for statistic analysis. The information was stored in a hierarchical data base structure independent of the application. The method was capable of performing most analyses, but the cost was too high and remaining analyses had to be carried out employing conventional programming techniques The experience gained from this project has been of value in designing a new data base system which stores data in a relational way. A short description of this new system is given.
