Abstract
It is the purpose of this chapter to acquaint the reader with certain mathematical notions and theorems used throughout the book. To do this, we will begin not with a biological model, but with a random walk process on a set of integers, which is one of the simplest Markov processes. Because of its mathematical simplicity, this process is an ideal starting point, enabling us to learn all the essential concepts and methods related to stochastic problems.
