Summary
The sulfide silver reaction can be readily utilized for the detection of ferritin iron by light microscopy.
With this method it was possible to demonstrate specific binding of ferritin to the immunologically competent cells of spleen, lymph nodes and peripheral blood after immunization with apoferritin.
Using the same technique, no cells giving a specific reaction with ferritin were found in non-immunized control animals or those immunized with human IgG.
Treatment with L-asparaginase before and 3 days after the injection of apoferritin caused a positive reaction in large lymphocytes. There was no reaction without treatment with L-asparaginase.
