Benign Tumours of the Lung

  • Chapter

Abstract

The benign tumours of the lung are considerably more uncommon than the malignant. In fact, it is generally considered that only about 10 per cent of all the tumours at this site are benign. Since the lungs consist of both epithelial and mesodermal tissue, there is every reason to anticipate that the tumours attacking them will represent a wide variety of types. Even if this is actually the case, the great majority of types are extremely uncommon and are even rarities. The most usual and clinically most important benign tumour of the lung is the so-called bronchial adenoma. Whether or not it is justified to classify this tumour without reservation as benign is open to discussion (vide infra). In the opinion of the present writers, it is closely related biologically to the purely benign tumours. Consequently, we have considered it appropriate to classify it under the heading of “benign tumours” rather than to place it in a special “semi-malignant” category between the benign and the malignant forms.
