Zusammenfassung

Im Stoffwechsel werden die mit der Ernährung zugeführten Nährstoffe durch chemische Umsetzungen zu energiearmen Endprodukten verbrannt. Die dabei freiwerdende Energie benutzt der Körper für seine Lebensfunktionen. Für derartige chemische Umsetzungen gelten innerhalb und außerhalb der Lebewesen allgemeine Grundgesetze, nämlich das Gesetz von der Erhaltung der Energie, das Massenwirkungsgesetz, die Temperaturregel und der Entropiesatz. Es ist zweckmäßig, diese allgemeinen Naturgesetze als Richtschnur für die Betrachtung der energetischen Scite des Stoffwechsels voranzustellen, da hierdurch von vorneherein Klarheit herrscht, bis zu welchen Grenzen unsere Erkenntnis des Stoffwechsels vorgedrungen ist. Hiermit soll nicht einer mechanistischen Betrachtung des Lebens das Wort geredet werden, im Gegenteil, gerade wenn diese klaren Prinzipien benutzt werden, übersieht man deutlich die wunderbaren Einrichtungen, mit deren Hilfe diese Gesetze dem Leben dienstbar gemacht werden.
